Subject: Learning the guitar

My friends bought me a classical guitar for my birthday a little over a year ago now, and I have been reading off tabs and learning a few chords for a bit of senseless strumming, and can write some basic stuff by trial and error, but as a play a few other instruments I just feel that I have no idea how to play this thing at all. How exactly should one start learning to play fingerpicked guitar?

fingerpicked?
I assume you mean apeggio? arpeggio?
see...I dont even know what I mean...

But the BASICS for it is...

If you are playing an A chord, you would pick the A string and then pick the last 3 or 4 strings in which ever way sounds nice. (also goes for C)

If you play an E or G chord, pluck the E string first.

D or F - D string.

I cant really think of which one for B right now!

I hope I have explained ok...

When you arpeggiate (sp?) in F, you start with D too?

Still, I think he refered to picking strings in general.

I start with the D string :-P
When I am playing F, the note is no longer D ^__^

Is that what you meant?

Ah, you meant the string, not what in that moment was the dominant: D.
You arpeggiate F starting with the 4th string, then, which is a d# in that case?

*goes to get guitar*

umm..

I dont think so.

E--1
B--1
G--2
D--3 (start picking here) -
A--3
E--0

That would make the starting note F ^__^ I do believe

But that's not an F chord :P I think it's what commonly known as E/F. The first string should be in 1 too.
Anyway, you were right, it's a F on the 3 string. For some reason, I pretended to play it without any fingers :P I'm too sleepy to think about my guitar without seeing it.

that sounds quite confusing, no i mean fingerpicking, whatever the work for that is "pitzicato?" or something like that i think, bearing in mind that it is a classical guitar...
an arpeggio is the 1st, 3rd, and 5th notes of the scale as far as i know... i guess that is the sirt if "tonic" chord like you were saying though??
Maybe i should just learn to read music off it.

i think that means "Chord/put in named note without taking out any of the main three notes."

You australians and your especial playing ways :P
They are essentially open or barred chords that add a different note and... well, I don't know why they are called that way :P
Example:
D/F#
e 2
B 3
G 3
D 0
A X
E 2

It's the D, but you add one more string.
