So You Wanna Be a DJ?

So you’ve decided that you want to support your fellow MusMaker’s by being an online DJ. Great! It’s a simple task setting up your computer so that you can DJ on SHOUTcast and the following wiki will take you step by step through downloading, installing and connecting.

Step 1:Downloading Winamp

Download winamp 5.x and this convenient link:

http://www.shoutcast.com/download/broadcast.phtml#download

You do not need to pay for it in order to DJ. Simply download the Basic Free option and select Full. After downloading do the logical thing of installing winamp and then move on to step two.

Step 2:DSP Plug-in

Winamp isn’t the only thing you need in order to dj, however. Having winamp only enables you to listen to the set (Windows media player also works for tuning in but not dj’ing), in order to DJ you must download the SHOUTcast DSP plug-in which can be found at:

http://www.shoutcast.com/download/broadcast.phtml#plugdownload

(If you’re more technically advanced a plug-in for linux, Mac OS X and FreeBSD can be found at http://www.shoutcast.com/download/broadcast.phtml#posixdownload

Step 2.1:Installing the DSP Plug-in

Once you have downloaded the plug-in open winamp and select Options > Preferences and on the left find the section marked Plug-ins > Output. A list will appear and on it select DirectSound output v2.45. Then click the configure button at the bottom of the window and select apply.

Step 2.2:DSP/Effect

Now return to the list on the left and under Plug-ins select DSP/Effects > Nullsoft SHOUTcast Source DSP v1.9.0. Once again click the configure button at the bottom of the window.

Voila! You’re DSP plug-in is now active.

Step 3:Setting SHOUTcast Source Parameters

Now that winamp and the DSP plug-in is installed you should have a lightning bolt icon as well as a lightning bolt with a bubble above it on your start toolbar. Click the lightning bolt to open winamp and then click the lightning bolt and bubble to open SHOUTcast Source

Step 3.1:Output Tab

Under the Output Tab seltect Output 1 from the Output list on the left and click on the Yellowpages button. Check the ‘Make this server public’ box, fill in the description with your screen name, type what kind of genre you’re playing (Anything works fine), leave the URL, AIM, ICQ and IRC boxes alone for now. Also check the ‘Enable Title Updates’ box.

Step 3.2:Encoder Tab

Under the Encoder Tab select Encoder 1 from the Encoder list on the left. The Encoder type should be MP3 Encoder and the Encoder Settings should be 40kbps, 22.050kHz, Stereo.

Step 3.3:Input Tab

The Input Tab is where you enable yourself to speak during your broadcast. In the Input Device scrollbar there are two options.

A) Winamp (Recommended) – Allows music in your playlist to be broadcast to listeners.
B) Soundcard Input – Allows you to speak to listeners via mic. Soundcard settings include: Input settings scroll bar - 44100Hz, Stereo, select the microphone circle and, of course, click Push to Talk when you want to talk.

It’s a simple matter of switching between Winamp and Soundcard while broadcasting. Just make sure you stop the music before beginning to talk or listeners will be able to hear the music in the background. Also make sure that once you’re done talking you switch back to Winamp so that listeners hear only the music and not you breathing heavily into the mic ;P

Step 4:Connecting to a Server

Once these steps are completed you’re free to connect to a SHOUTcast server. Each server has a different address, port and password. Once you know these you simply enter SHOUTcast Source > Output Tab > Connection and place the proper parameters in the proper boxes (Labelled address, port and password). After this is finished hit play on your playlist and click connect in SHOUTcast Source and then sit back and behold your streaming capabilities.
