First off, apologies for the MIDI format, but I don't have the luxury of having people perform in-progress crap, so I take what I get from Finale :D

Well, I received an assignment in Music Theory to write a short (eight bar) composition in a church mode for my instrument. This was an attempt in D-Phrygian, but it sounds more like d minor to me. The only difference between the two is the E-flat in phrygian. I use E-flat once in the melody, and no E-naturals, but every E in the harmonic line is naturalized. I did that mainly because in the phrygian mode, the dominant chord is diminished unless you raise the fifth, which I did with the E.

The last chord goes into D Major, though, which I guess is just the simple Piccardy third. However, I can't tell, knowing the music, if the last chord is an authentic cadence, or does it sound to everyone else more like a half-cadence? The reason I'm curious is because the D chord in g minor (same key as D-Phrygian) is the dominant, so it sounds very strange to me. I essentially, if I were in g minor, ended on a dominant chord that's been altered into a different key anyways. I wish I understood the theory behind my own writing :P
